IT

So guys, get ready to see something like wardrobe malfunction, gay designers, undercutting Czech/Hungarian/random-Easter-European-country models, underpaid workers in sweatshops, child labor n exploitation... get the drift?

Thank you so much Mr Bhandarkar, for making us acquainted with the nuisances of Mumbai bar girls, Page 3 reporters n socialites, Corporate honchos, Traffic signal workers n soon fashion world. Pardon my audacity, but may I suggest the theme of your next movie after fashion.
I T
Yes sir, u heard it right, Information Technology. Cmon, please enlighten the whole country about these ‘poster boys of matrimonial classifieds who are paid handsomely, perceived to be intelligent and travel abroad frequently, but in reality are not programmers, but mere coders’. Let each and every prospective father-in-law know that the nincompoop he plans for his bundle-of-joy is a mere 'smart assembly line worker'.

Please let the countrymen know that the so-called software engineers are doing nothing but cut-copy-paste and producing kilo lines of code day after day in a single repeatable fashion. Tell them how the overzealous managers estimate 5 days of work by 4 people into a 3 day work by 2 people and we spineless creatures won’t say a word just coz they pay us well. Tell them that it requires an IQ only higher than a plant to fix the errors after market close so that all settlements can be done n trade can resume the next day at NSE/BSE. Tell them that scanning n monitoring a banking rollout night after night is something which your neighborhood watchman can very well do with some basic computer training. Tell them how we are also responsible for the sky-rocketing real estate prices.

Tell them how we salivate when we hear the words onsite. How dollars are all we think when we are awake or asleep, whereas other professionals traveling abroad are doing it for a) their love for America/any-other-country b) to help the citizens of that country in every way possible c) to make the population and space density a little less in India d) other charitable reasons.
Please , oh please, Mr Bhandarkar, this is something you must do to stop the millions of collegians who dream to be an IT professional.

This also happens to be the year when my day of my birth, coincides with the day my birthday is. Couple of decades and a few years ago, it was another Saturday night. Will try and put this post up at the exact time of my birth - 12:40 am.

27 ... n still going strong!!!

PS: Thank you Deepti, for being the first one to call n wish.

M back!

OK people, am back. Back to Denmark, back to work, with a terrible cold.
Well just wanted to post something so here is something lame:-

Your Birthdate: September 10

Independent and dominant, you tend to be the alpha dog in most situations.
You're very confident, and hardly anything ever shakes you.
Mundane tasks tend to drain you - you prefer to be making great plans.
You are quite original. When people don't "get" you, it bothers you a lot.

Your strength: Your ability to gain respect

Your weakness: Caring too much what others think

Your power color: Orange-red

Your power symbol: Letter X

Your power month: October

Will post about the India trip once I am done with the work backlog and the current things at hand.
This is also a hint to all you people that my birthday is only about a month away and I have officially started accepting gifts. In case you have any difficulty in sending me the gifts you may also send me cash or wire the money. Lemme know and I will furnish further details for you.

I promise loads of pictures n posts upon return. (Hmmmm....I know about some of them right now like 'How to beat the Delhi Heat', 'How I successfully avoided my Mom's attempts to find a girl for me').

BTW.. if I know you and you happen to be in Delhi anytime within 3 weeks from tomorrow, drop me a line at:-

Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man

So who is this person?? A faint resemblance to Gurudutt perhaps, but still not sure aren't you? A distinguished thespian and filmactor, an exemplary playwright, a notable singer, a patriotic freedom fighter, an excellent tailor, an eminent activist and the list goes on... Ladies n gentlemen please put your hands together for Mr. Avtar Kishore Hangal.

On Monday the President honored Mr Hangal with the
Padma Bhushan, for distinguished service of high order in the field of Arts.

Funny how no one, to whom I showed this pic to earlier, could tell me who the person was. Somehow we have always seen him in the role of an aged person. Sometimes as the teacher Master Dinanath, or as the humble domestic help Ramu Kaka, or the wise old man of the village or something similar. The very thought that this man was once young seems kinda alien.

Born in Sialkot in a family of Kashmiri pandits, Mr Hangal's family soon moved to Peshawar where he was introduced to theatre by his father. His theatrical pursuits led him to join the Shri Sangeet Priya Mandal where he perfomred some of his earliest plays. Apart from theatre he also did plays and songs on Radio. To support his family he took up tailoring and soon became the highest paid cutter in Peshawar. The leisure time was devoted to music n theatre. After Partition he came to India. He started his film career with Guddi. It was Hrishikesh Mukherjee who was responsible for "dragging him into films" as Mr Hangal himself puts it. After that there was no looking back.

Many memorable roles in more than
200 films like Namak Haram, Kora Kagaz, Aandhi, Sholay, Chitchor, Choti Si Baat, Naram Garam, Saath Saath, Bawarchi, Shaukeen and he still continies to amaze us with appearances in films like Lagaan and Paheli.

I remember watching him on the TV in which he narrated a very humourous incident. He was in the hospital under treatment and had called for a barber for a shave. While talking to the barber he incidently asked him about A K Hangal and the barber said something like "He died way back".

Hangal Sahab, to your good health and many more memorable roles.
Cheers!!

RANT

Its been snowing regularly for the past two weeks... the temp is anywhere between a chilling -10 Deg C to a warm 0 Deg C... and on days when we are lucky enough to have sunshine, we even have temperature in positive... AMAZING.. isn't it??? But my rant is not about the weather.. It's the way we handle it .. the way Mother Nature has been unsincere with half of the earth's population... The Men... the so called stronger sex.

While I move about in my huddled like a ball stance, protected by sweater and a jacket and desperately waiting to reach office in the mornings, I can only feel cheated when I look at the girl who is quite comfortable baring her legs in a mini skirt... I look away - more from envy than guilt of staring at her legs.

Not only here .. back home in India too women somehow feel less cold ... no wonder Diya Mirza can sing 'Zara zara behakta hain' in Swiss Alps in a skimpy outfit, while Madhavan, the lad from south - whose idea of a chilly winter is 20 degrees celcius in Chennai, can only manage to pull a smile, that too frozen.. Poor guy...Reportedly, the hypothermia has done such irreversible damage that the only smile he's left with now, is frozen. How Salman Khan n Hrithik Roshan can manage a bare-chested stint in snow n still be alive to tell the tale beats me.

If bearing the harsh European winters is a matter of strength then we still need to do some homework... For the time being I pronounce Women as the stronger sex... not only that .. they are also the warmer sex.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY to you all.
Here two of the most romantic poems I know:-

TUM

shaguftagi ka, latafat ka, shahkaar ho tum
fakat bahar nahi, haasil-e-bahar ho tum
jo ek phool mein hain kaid, woh gulistaan ho
jo ek kali mein hain pinha, woh lalazaar ho tum
latafato ki tamanna, nazakato ki uraad
guroor kaliyon ka, phoolon ka inkesaar ho tum
jise tarang mein fitrat ne gungunaya hain
woh bhairavi, ho woh deepak, ho woh malhaar ho tum
tumhare jism mein khabeeda hain hazaro raag
nigah chedti hain jisko, woh sitar ho tum
jise utha na sake justajoo, woh moti ho
jise na gunth sake arzoo, woh haar ho tum
jise na boojh sake ishq, woh paheli ho
jise na samajh saka pyar bhi woh pyar ho tum
khuda kare kisi daaman mein janam ho nan sake
yeh mere ashq-e-hasin, jinse aashiqaar ho tum

~Kaifi Azmi

EK LAMHA

zindagi naam hain kuch lamho ka
aur unme mein bhi wahi ek lamha
jisme do bolti aankhen
chai ki pyali se jab uthein
to dil mein doobey
doob ke dil mein kahe
aaj tum kuch na kaho
aaj hum kuch na kahein
bas unhi baithey rahe
haath mein haath liye
gum ki saugaat liye
garmi-e-jazbaatliye
kaun jaane ki isi lamhe mein
door parbat par kahin barf pighalne hi lage

Not So Funny Cartoons

They certainly aren't funny... not to me atleast... Something which has caused so much of controversy, agitation and protest... The recent controversy over the Prophet Mohammed cartoons in the Danish paper Jyllands Posten on September 30, 2005 has sparked of a series of everything. More cartoons, more protests, more bonfires, more cartoons again and more counter cartoons.

It turmoil started taking simmering in 2004 when the movie "
Submission" by Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh was released. Working from a script written by Ayaan Hirsi Ali, van Gogh created the 10-minute movie Submission. The movie deals with the topic of violence against women in Islamic societies.... telling the stories of four abused Muslim women. The title itself, "Submission", is the translation of the word "Islam" in english. In the film, the women's naked bodies are veiled with semi-transparent shrouds as they kneel in prayer, telling their stories as if they are speaking to Allah. Quranic verses unfavourable to women are painted on their bodies in Arabic.... after the movie was released in 2004, both van Gogh and Hirsi Ali received death threats

Van Gogh was murdered in the early morning of Tuesday November 2, 2004, in Amsterdam... Eight bullets, slit throat and two knives implanted in his torso… Mohammed Bouyeri was arrested along with eight Islamic radicals belonging to a group later referred to as the Hofstad Network.
BBC coverage on the issue

Come 2005 and a writer named Kåre Bluitgen wrote a children's book about the profet Muhammed's life and searched artists to do some illustrations of Muhammed. He only found one artist willing to draw but the artist demanded that his name wouldn't be mentioned. He feared violent attacks from angry muslims (keep in mind the van Gogh murder was still pretty recent). This made Kåre Bluitgen, who is very leftist, openly question the self-censorship and freedom of expression in Denmark. Danish Muslim organizations organised protests after these cartoons were published. As the controversy has grown, some or all of the cartoons have been reprinted in newspapers in more than 30 other countries, which eventually led to significant unrest around the world, particularly in Islamic countries where the cartoons were seen as culturally insensitive, rather outrageous.

As an aftermath of this,
more cartoons are being churned out as u read this… Photoshop contests to create more offensive cartoons, anti semitic cartoons, anti Israel cartoons, anti US cartoons…Hell!! even Lord Ganesha hasn’t been spared… (as if M F Hussain and fashion designers, who are inspired to put Hindu deities on undergarments, hadn’t done enough already)

Anti Humanity Cartoons – that’s what they are....
What next???Where are we heading ??? Can the world handle more
Crusades??? I think not....

Happy Republic Day

26th January 2006. Bharat ganrajya ka satawanwa gantantra diwas. 57th Republic Day of India.

A
list of songs that I have cued on Music India Online

Aao Bachchon Tumhe Dikhaayen - Jagriti
Ab Ke Baras - Kranti
Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan - Haqeeqat
Ae Watan - Shaheed
Apni Azadi Ko Hum - Leader
Aye Mere Pyare Watan - Kabuliwala
Aye Watan Tere Liye - Karma
Bharat Ka Rahnewala Hoon - Purab Aur Pachhim
Dekho Veer Jawano - Aakraman
Chodo Kal ki Baatein - Hum Hindustani
Jahan Daal Daal Pe - Sikander-E-Azam
Kadam Kadam Badhaye Ja
Mera Rang De Basanti
Mere Desh Ki Dharti - Upkar
Nanna Munna Rahi Hoon
Sare Jahan Se Accha Hindustan Sadhana Sargam
Sarfarosh Ki Tamana - Shaheed
Taqat Watan Ki Hum Se - Prem Pujari
Watan Pe Jo Fida Hoga - Phool Bane Angaare
Yeh Desh Hai Veer Jawanon Ka - Naya Daur

And my fav patriotic song is "Chodo Kal ki Baatein"... the song is progressive.. it talks about future... it doesnt linger on the past laurels earned or the great tradition of the yester decades/centuries...It asks us to leave aside the thoughts about the greatness of country, its culture... coz thats old...Think ahead.. think of the future and shape it.

Chhodo kal ki baatein, kal ki baat puraani
Naye daur mein likhenge milkar nayi kahaani
Hum Hindustani, hum Hindustani
Hum Hindustani, hum Hindustani

Aaj puraani zanjeeron ko tod chuke hain
Kya dekhe us manzil ko jo chhod chuke hain
Chaand ke dar pe jaa pahuncha hai aaj zamaana
Naye jagat se hum bhi naata jod chuke hain
Naya khoon hai, nayi umangein, ab hai nayi jawaani
Hum Hindustani

Humko kitne Taj Mahal hain aur banane
Kitne hi Ajanta humko aur sajane
Abhi palatna hain rukh kitne dariyaon ka
Kitne parbat raho se hain aaj hatane
Hum Hindustani

Aao mehnat ko apna imaan banaaye
Apne haathon ko apna bhagwaan banaaye
Ram ki is dharti ko Gautam ki bhoomi ko
Sapnon se bhi pyaara Hindustan banaaye
Naya khoon hai, nayi umangein, ab hai nayi jawaani
Hum Hindustani

Har zarra hai moti, aankh uthaakar dekho
Maati mein sona hai, haath badhaakar dekho
Sone ki yeh ganga hai, chaandi ki yamuna
Chaaho to patthar pe dhaan ugaakar dekho
Naya khoon hai, nayi umangein, ab hai nayi jawaani
Hum Hindustani

Daag ghulami ka dhoya hain jaan lutake
Deep jalaye hain yeh kitne deep bujhake
Li hain aazadi to phir is aazadi ko
Rakhna hoga har dushman se aaj bachake
Naya khoon hai, nayi umangein, ab hai nayi jawaani
Hum Hindustani

Chhodo kal ki baatein, kal ki baat puraani
Naye daur mein likhenge milkar nayi kahaani
Hum Hindustani, hum Hindustani
Hum Hindustani, hum Hindustani

(I wont even attempt a translation)

Au Revoir 2005

2005 has been an eventful year. Somethings good some not so good.

In the very beginning of the year I completed something which I was contemplating for a long time. I got certified in the technology in which I work i.e. Siebel. What followed next was a series of arguments/discussions with my manager to get released from the project GEMS. I had completed something like 1.5 years in the project and according to me it was time for me to move on. I had hit a point when the work didn’t offer anything new, exciting or challenging. My manager thought otherwise and wanted me to go to Bangalore where the project was shifting in some time. But I did not relent on my stand and finally got released. With nothing viable for me to take up immediately, I was on bench for about two months. These two months I spent giving trainings to people, preparing technical documents and writing a proposal for a project. This was something new for me, esp. the proposal writing part. And I did learn a few things which were quite diff from the regular stuff.

Finally I was offered this project, in Denmark, and I took it. I was informed just a week in advance of my departure about the project and hence the trip home was a short one. This was also the time when I sat in an airplane for the first time. Mumbai –Delhi – Mumbai. 29th May I was in Denmark. New team, new project and new client. After about a month or so I was asked to develop something using Java. Until that time I had not written a single line of code in Java. The task to develop an entire component in Java seemed daunting at first. The initial days were tough. After Java came PL/SQL which was another unknown area till then. Finally all the project deliverables were met and right now the project is in UAT phase.

Some new work coming my way after which I should be heading home. This was also the year when the company introduced the Skill Based Incentives in certain hot technologies and I was a recipient.

Apart from all that stuff on the proff front a few other things happened in 2005.

I started blogging, If it wasn’t for blogging you wouldn’t be here reading me.

I learnt how to cook. While in Bombay the maid used to cook for me. But here there are no maids and hence one needs to fend for himself. And just for the records, I am pretty good at it.

I experienced snow for the first time in life. Sometime in mid Nov and it was great.

I turned 26 and 2 grad and 3 post grad classmates got married. Time to start making my plans. Plans to fail my mom’s attempts to get me married in recent future..

Met new people. Made friends with some, lost touch with some pals and reconnected with some long lost pals.
In 2005 I indulged in two hobbies of mine. Photography n Traveling. Got myself a new camera – Canon S1 – IS and traveled to Goteberg in Sweden, Paris, Amsterdam n Rotterdam, and a few places in Denmark.

In 2005 I neglected the guitar. Its been over six months since I last touched the strings, My guitar is lying in India at a friends place. In hindsight I think the decision to not bring it along was a rather foolish one.

Those two months on bench let me do a bit of reading which I had not done for quite some time. Fiction, non fiction, autobiographies and some lame stuff.

In the past year I think I have grown. Learnt a few new things and tried not to forget the old. Discovered some new facets of me. I think I know myself more than I knew ever before.

Ancient Zen wisdom says – “He who knows others is wise. He who knows himself is enlightened.” So the journey to wards enlightenment continues.

Rang De Basanti

There is something about this song which charges me up... Daler does a fantastic job...I loved him in Rubaro from Maqbool ... Chitra is like a light soothing breeze in the furore created by Daler paaji... the continuous beating of the drums and the ek-tara do you more good than instant coffee....

Highly foot tapping...rustic lyrics that ooze with "desh ki mitti ki khushboo"....no bhangra-shangra/UK-born-n-bred-desi-boys kinda music...its truly a song to be loved by one n all.. north n south… listen to it with earphones and preferably loud volume.. U’ll love it.

If u haven’t heard it till now, then go get it.

*********************************************************
Thx Anshul for tagging me.. I will surely post all that tagging-wala-stuff once I am back from my Xmas vacation...

X'mas Dinner

Well last week was at this Xmas dinner with people from office... Client as well as us... about 30 people.

We reached the venue just on time...about 6 pm and the party lasted till about 11:30...

Great food Good drinks and some great company...

I was flanked by Peter and Trine (pronounced Trina - it was actually one of those arrangements where u make sure all the sit in a way that on either side of a desi will be a client), opposite to me was Marcel and next to him were Sachin my roommate, and Regi. Now Trine is a live-wire and the most helpful and bubbly person in the office from client side...

The small talks(involving 2 people) lead to larger talks (3-4 person) and Trine was helping me with the menu... actually all the desis had to be helped coz the menu was in Danish which no one of us understands except the relationhip manager, who wasnt there that evening... the food was ordered n the drinks started flowing... I ordered (what I now recall as) "Klosterbyrg"... thats some kind of inhouse beer these guys had and were famous for (I have been told)...

Now started the bigger kinds of discussions (involving 4 or more person) and some of the topics were :-

How the wives of the desis could start an Indian restaurant in Aalborg(In
hindsight I think it is a great idea)
The great Indian Matrimony (thx to Deepak's almost-fixed arranged marriage thats
slated to happen sometime in the summer of 06)
How Sachin Deepak n me are the only bachelors in the group of 18 people...
How Trine is still single and Why Trine and yours truly should hook up (this one
invoked a out-of-the-book gag reflex by me.. thankfully the beer didnt
spill...Why??? Now Trine is the sweetest, bubbliest and youngest person from
client side but she still is about 9 years older than me and I m not in my
teens)

Some great live music was playing in the background plus the food and drinks & the general festive mood did the trick. I sure had a good time..

At the end of it all Trine knew how to say "Namaste" and she had just discovered that she had been eating "Daliya" all this while for breakfast. Kirsten (the business lead) was waving and saying "Phir Milenegy" to all and I had run out of my ciggarettes, thx to Dutta and Venky.

Gimme Red and more

Reservations have been done, tickets have been made and the wait commences for the long awaited X'mas vacation... come 24th Dec n I'm off to a 5 day holiday to Paris, Rotterdam and Amsterdam (Nudge Nudge Wink Wink!!)... After visiting Goteberg, Sweden, in mid Aug I haven't really been anywhere , except for Hirtshals but it was more like a go-in-the-morning-come-back-in-the-evening kinda trips, which though are very good to give you that much needed break don't quiet satisfy the appetite for travel

The tug of the sack on your shoulders, the waistpouch containing maps of diff places... trying out new cuisines.. wandering in awe of the magnificient structures and their history...Ohhhh the whole thing gives me goosebumps... just can't wait!!

Now coming to the original story of this post... suddenly the color red has captured everything...Posters are red... Clothes on display at the shop windows are red... the decorations are red the clothes are red and the caps are red...whole Aalborg is more red than it ever was in the last six months... Christmas fever catching up.... and today I saw this band which was marching down the road and playing "Jingle Bells"…Small kids were also part of the band ... all decked up in Red... could help but admire the whole procession .... Festivity is in the air and u can feel it... Maybe I will pick up my camera one of these days and shoot all I can and post...

Yeah def. one of these days!!

Chocolate and Iqbal

This weekend I saw two movies
Chocolate and Iqbal

Yeah I know they were released ages ago lekin time lagta hain yaar Copenhagen tak aane mein DVD ko and then from Copenhagen someone has to get it to Aalborg n then when ur turn comes u get to watch it...

Well... about Chocolate the lesser said the better... Anil Kappoor - hyperactive eccentric lawyer(whats with him n eccentric characters?? me thinks it all started with his much acclaimed Taal performance n just doesn't want to let go), Irfan's 'natural acting', Emran yet again obsessed with sex or money or both, Arshad is OK and so is Suniel Shetty (just a bit of advice...that hairstyle wont get you anywhere close to being a Rocker)
Sushma Reddy ... Baby there's more to acting than push-up bras
Tanushree Dutta: OK so this gal really makes Tara Sharma's acting seem like Oscar winning.... coupled with lyrics like "Mummy ko nahi hain pata" want you to forget the movie as soon as u can... however I liked her twin assets very much... NO, not her tits you pervert!!.. I was talking about her eyes... Big n Beautiful...

Biggest Let-Down
Item number by Mumait Khan
It could have been a lot better had Anil Kapoor not decided to steal the rhythm of the song every now n then.. and Mumait. Honey u need to loose those rolls of fat which have started making their presence felt...

Iqbal on the other hand is alltogether diff world ... Rampur from where emerges Rampur Express..a deaf-mute boy who aims to make it to the Indian cricket team... against all odds.. and finally manages to do so...
Strong performances by Nasser, Girish Karnad n Shreyas Talpade.. (the facial expressions and body language)
Is like any other Nagesh Kukunoor film - no frills attached... however he doesnt make an appearence as in almost all his other movies... Kapil Paaji does... however not like the most-forgettable one in Mujhse Shaadi Karogi

Banished to Hell !!
